Remember this legend? I bet it brings back fond memories! Life was simple back then and loads of fun.
Six years before that photo was shot, Durban South Toyota opened for business, in the coastal suburb of Amanzimtoti.
We started in a small showroom in Rockview Road, overlooking the ocean.
Like a toddler learning to walk, the early years were about taking baby steps. Sometimes we fell, other times we stumbled. There were even times when we ran like kids in full cry.
It wasn’t long before we made our presence felt in and around Durban (mostly due to our crazy marketing and deals).
We were up against the established players in Durban, so the occasion called for extraordinary measures.
We became famous for ads like these placed in the Sunday papers, a tradition that carries on today!
Soon we outgrew Rockview Road. So, our directors identified a site and built a brand-new showroom in Rosslyn Road, Amanzimtoti. At the time, it was famously exclaimed that “We’ll never need a bigger facility than this.”.
As they say – “Never say never.”.
Those were the golden days of car sales, and from Rosslyn Road, we produced some of our best sales figures to date.
However, after a few years at Rossyln Road, history repeated itself and our management team realised we’d be better positioned to serve our customers in a new, modern dealership. Construction began on our current showroom in 2007, and in April 2009 we officially opened for business at 2 Prospecton Road!
From early on, our dealer principal (Raj Rampathy) and director (Nassir Akoob) encouraged us to be active in the community around us. That was wise counsel! It got us outside, onto the beaches, roadways and schools – allowing us to experience the rewards of contribution.
Our people could be found cleaning the beaches, handing out refreshments at race events, lending a helping hand at rural schools and just about any meaningful course on the South Coast.
Our open-days and vehicle launches always proved popular.
It must have been something to do with the mouth-watering savouries and refreshments served. Even today, we take great care to serve up a menu that tantalises (and sometimes burns) the taste buds!
As, without YOU attending, test-driving and filling our showrooms – there’s no event to write about!
Today, Toyota remains South Africa’s car manufacturer of choice, finishing 2016 as market leaders for 36 consecutive years!
As for us at Durban South Toyota – With your support, we’ve prospered at our Prospecton dealership and pledge to walk with you into the future, continuing “Excellence in all we do!”.
